Sharing Our Journeys

You are here

Sharing Our Journeys (SOJ) is a project aimed at telling the stories of older LGBTQ  adults 55+; as well as bridging LGBTQ generations through bringing queer seniors and youth together.

The Storycatcher Project , spread over four monthly social evenings brings older adults together with a mentor to record memories, and create an art project based on them. Separately, younger LGBTQ people develop their own art, based on their experience of queer identity. The social evenings include a simple soup, augmented by dishes brought by the participants. A sharing of thoughts and feelings follows an activity, like a film or a speaker.

Eight older adults joined six youth for November's intergenerational LGBTQ discussion and dinner, "Journeying Together," the second in the four-part series. We heard from Pat Hogan (centre), a local feminist and lesbian activist, arts producer, and entrepreneur, about her experiences growing up in small-town Connecticut, dealing with the challenges of single parenthood in the 1960s, moving to San Francisco, becoming radicalized, and eventually coming out in her 40s. An active, informative conversation followed; and participants enthused about the evening.

Upcoming sessions are on November 29, when we will hear from Sequoia Thom, who went from being a fighter pilot in the Vietnam War, to becoming a radical queer activist; and December 13, which will feature Gayle Roberts, a transgender woman in her 70s.

All sessions are at the Youth Space in Sunnyside Community Hall, located at Bakerview Park, 1845 154 St., from 6-8:30 pm. The evenings begin with a potluck dinner. If you or someone you know identifies as an LGBTQ youth or senior (55+), and are interested, please contact Neil at communityprograms@alexhouse.net for more information or to register.

In January, there will be a celebration to unveil the printed and bound memories of the older participants, which they may share with loved ones. Their art will be displayed along with the art of the younger participants.
